To all of the anglophiles, Austenites and nerdfighters out there, this is the new webseries for you. Produced by nerdfighter and Vlog Brother, Hank Green, The Lizzie Bennet Diaries is a modern retelling of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.
The Lizzie Bennet Diaries tells the story of Pride and Prejudice in a whole new light. Lizzy Bennet is a 20-something graduate student who begins the video diaries project as part of a thesis for school. The story follows the plot line of the novel closely, although many of the events and locations are modified to make more sense in a 21-century context. Actually, one of my favorite parts about the web series is seeing how they adapt parts of the book for today’s world, it’s pretty fun. This is one of those web series you grow to love more deeply over time as you get to know the characters.
The characterization and acting is actually really enjoyable. Ashley Clements is an endearing Elizabeth Bennet, despite Lizzy’s stubbornness and childish behavior (has no one ever noticed that in the books?!) She has a good grasp of comedic timing and really owns the part. Jane Bennet is played by Laura Spencer, and I have been impressed by some of her acting work throughout the diaries. As a whole, it’s a very strong cast across the board.
Here’s episode one (as a note, I didn’t really get into it until about episode 6, then I was hooked):
