Why Gaming for Christmas 2012 Sucks

Last year was one of the best Christmases I’ve had in a very long time. With hotly anticipated video games like Uncharted 3, Skyrim and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, my packages under the Christmas tree were all thin, square boxes filled with gaming delight.

This fall has featured great game releases including Borderlands 2 and Assassin’s Creed III. But as I looked forward towards the release schedule for the holiday season, I was severely disappointed. Here are the major gaming releases coming up in November/December:

  • Call of Duty Black Ops II, November 13, 2012
  • New Super Mario Bros. U, November 18, 2012
  • Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale, November 20, 2012
  • Hitman: Absolution, November 20, 2012
  • Far Cry 3, December 4, 2012

So we have some FPS business, a platformer game and some third person shooter/action games. There is only one original IP and there is nothing for you if  you are an RPG gamer of ANY sort. After last year’s bounty, it’s rather disappointing. There’s nothing new or fresh here, unless you count the Wii U console launch with it’s subsequent game. The Wii U doesn’t really jazz my saxophone so to speak, but maybe you like weird motion control/tablet business and this will be the highlight of your holiday?

Many of the games anticipated for this season were regretfully pushed back into the first or second quarter of 2013. Tomb Raider (March 5, 2013 ) and BioShock Infinite (February 26, 2013) were two story driven games that I wish had come out in time for the holidays. I guess the wish list is going to be for practical things like sweaters and boots. Sad.
