Mike Ando is a very ambitious man. Many nerds across the years have created books in testament to their favorite game, Myst.
Ando set his sights on recreating a real Myst linking book – and the results are astounding. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Myst, it was an incredible popular adventure video game that original came out for Mac OS. It has been ported to a variety of console and computer systems, including the Nintendo DS and iOS. The game puts the player in the role of the “Stranger”. Using a special linking book to travel to the island of Myst, the player then uses other special books written by an artisan and explorer named Atrus to travel to several worlds known as “Ages”.
Essentially, Ando found a worn book in excellent condition that fit the specifications for appearance. He then hollowed the book out, built a mini computer that runs Windows XP inside the computer and inserted a 5 inch LED backlight display. Switch on the computer, open the book and the magic of Myst comes alive in an incredible way.
This mod is impressive and the work blog tracking Ando’s progress is very interest. Ando is selling the book for a whopping $15k, so if you’ve got the dime, you could be the proud owner of a real Myst book.
