As a young girl growing up in the 1990’s, I was frequently frustrated that the vast majority of video games featured male protagonists only. I had female role models in books and in television, but games were sorely bereft of female role models (it’s gotten better…ish!)
Even though this is an older story on the internet, it did my heart well to hear:
Mike Hoye is a dad who shared my frustration. He wanted to give his daughter Maya a positive female role model in video games. Hoye was inspired when playing The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker with her. He read the screen text aloud and but swapped the gendered pronouns to make it sound like Link was a girl, but this was “annoying and awkward.” Therefore, Hoye actually hacked the game to change all the pronouns, thereby turning Link into a girl.
Hoye put instructions for this hack on his blog. I thought this was a fabulous idea, especially for Zelda because Link’s design can easily pass as FemLink (ask the cosplayers!)
