Featured Art(ist) – MyCKs

This week’s featured art(ist) is MyCKs.

MyCKs’ art has been blowing up the Tumblr blogsphere for a couple of weeks now. Her paintings are based on the traditional Asian ink painting technique of Sumi-e (or Sumie). Merging popular gaming and nerd culture with this ancient technique has generate  some fascinating visuals unlike most typical nerd art.

The inherent drama within the art style of sumi-e is wonderful for the genre of gaming art. The fluidity of the ink carries a sense of motion, a dynamic of only seeing a snapshot of a moment. For example, the ink style in the Minecraft piece below adds a sense of movement and drama to the painting.

MyCKs’ distinct visual style is a great example of a contemporary artist, with contemporary subject matter, turning towards an ancient technique to create artwork of an innovative quality.
